Artificial Intelligence in defence sector

Artificial Intelligence in defence sector has created an impact globally. The AI defense market was valued at the US $ 7.7 Billion in 2018 and is expected to reach the US $ 18.82 Billion by 2025. The potential for AI is present in all the domains of defense like army, navy and air force cyberspace, intelligence, and including political, strategic, tactical, and operational warfares.

Artificial Intelligence can be used for creating simulations and  train the soldiers to get used to the different fighting systems, which is important for actual military tasks. The navy and army of different countries use Artificial Intelligence to create sensor simulation programmes to help the soldiers.

Artificial Intelligence in national security

Any artificial intelligence powered  system that performs tasks under varying and unpredictable situations without significant human oversight, or that can learn from experience and improve performance when exposed to data sets.

Artificial intelligence plays a prominent role in securing the nation. The military in various countries use AI systems in combat via a most visible artificial intelligence tool, designed to process imagery and full-motion video from drones and spontaneously detect potential targets.

Artificial Intelligence in military weapons

In some places, Artificial Intelligence technology like facial recognition has already been used in weapons which are operated without human control. In early 2010, the arms division of South Korean tech giant Samsung invented autonomous sentry guns that use image recognition to spot humans and shoot them.

Artificial Intelligence provides robotic assistance on the battlefield, which allows forces to maintain or expand warfighting capacity without increasing manpower.

Drones in Indian defence

The war between Russia and Ukraine has once again highlighted the role of drones in combat. Currently, Indian military  forces are dependent on foreign-made drones. But soon, India will have a drone that could be used in armed missions.

Drones in Indian defence

A total of 76 Tapas drones will be used in the armed forces—the Army with  60 drones, the Air Force with 12 and the Navy with 4. Though the original completion date of the project was 2016, it would be extended to 2023. The government of India has made it clear that there will be no further extension.

Artificial Intelligence in air defence

The readying of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the air force will deliver quicker and safer military performance exploitation of fewer resources. AI will promote situational awareness, give call support, determine knowledge patterns, and alter prognostic maintenance and pilot coaching through simulation environments.

To understand more about outliers in flight patterns, the Air Force has started working with Crowdbotics which is an Application Development Software to analyze and process the data that airplanes already collect.

  • Logistics & Transportation
  • Target Recognition
  • Battlefield Healthcare
  • Combat Simulation & Training
  • Threat Monitoring & Situational Awareness

Future of artificial intelligence in military

The Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are apparently taking steps to make sure AI is used effectively in preparing for potential conflicts.

India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh revealed that India would develop 25 defense-specific AI products by 2024. India has also created the Defence AI Project Agency (DAIPA) with an annual budget of $13.2 million for AI programs.

Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar said media people, “We are going to have a programme where a total of 75 products powered by Artificial Intelligence will be launched on July 11th 2022. It would be possibly the largest event. The launch of 75 products coincided with the 75 years of Aazadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.”

The development of artificial intelligence in defence sector presents a range of risks that need to be addressed

The development of military AI presents a variety of risks that require to be addressed

  • Ethical risks square measure necessary from a humanitarian point of view.
  • Operational risks arise from questions on the responsibility, fragility, and security of AI systems.
  • Strategic and planned risks include the chance that AI can increase the likelihood of war, increase current conflicts, and proliferate to malicious actors.

FAQ

What are the benefits of AI in military?

AI provides robotic assistance to the military in war fields and helps in building the strength of sensors. Robotic assistance refers to drone networks and automatic drill machines. Detecting and scanning the hidden enemies from dark and deep places is done by AI.

Why is artificial intelligence important in war?

Artificial intelligence is capable of  changing the conduct of war and can make predictions of war from data, it does not necessarily mean that  AI machines can replace human decision makers.

Can AI stop war?

Till now there are no acknowledged examples  of AI being used to resolve conflicts or war  between opposing nations or parties. However, research has begun and put the groundwork for real-world applications.

Will future wars be fought with robots?

In Spite of using AI-powered robotic technology in recent years, there are still some tasks where robots are not well suited for. It’s far more likely that robots will work alongside human soldiers and provide support by taking over some of the more dangerous tasks.

Does India have robot army?

The All India Robotics Association (AIRA), a Hyderabad-based trade body of the Robotics industry in India announced the of making India’s indigenously built defence robots. Defense robots are professional service robots that are deployed for military combat services.

Who makes drones for Indian Army?

Mumbai based ideaForge has won the contract to deliver more than 200 SWITCH UAVs to the Indian Army.

Is AI used in the Indian Army?

According to a report by The Times of India, India’s defense forces are apparently focusing on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military to allow faster decision-making and shorten the sensor-to-shooter loop, citing top defense officials.
